Peace I bequeath to you, my own peace I give you, a peace which the world cannot give, this is my gift to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. - John 14:27
I wanted to talk about Evan's 16th birthday on May 1st during my brief remarks at Evanwalk this past Sunday, but could not muster the strength. I wanted to talk about the passage of time and remind everyone that Evan had just turned 11 years old when he was diagnosed with cancer. How in the first few days he told us he wished he was still 10, so he wouldn't be sick. And, how he had just turned 13 when six weeks later he went home to be with God. But I could not get the words out.
Three years ago, Evanwalk started as a grief project. It gave all of us a purpose. A way to honor Evan on his birthday and to try and do some good. This year, thanks to our very dear friends and family, a wonderful group of volunteers and generous corporate sponsors we raised $16,000 more toward the Evan Hoffman Children's Fund at St. John's Children's Hospital. A total of $48,000 in three years. We can never thank everyone enough.
It was so heartwarming to see many of Evan's special friends and classmates at Evanwalk. So shocking to see how they've all grown into young adults. I know that he will continue to walk with all of you in spirit.
We love and miss you so so much, dear sweet Evan.
